Roland’s Journey
Roland Cardoza graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a double minor in philosophy and psychology. He was on a path to attend law school at Stanford, but life changed after his father passed away several years ago. He prioritized his widowed mother, and Roland withheld attending law school to help support her.
This year, Roland began his new career in the insurance field. This venture started as a part-time job, but Roland quickly realized there were many beneficial qualities to working as an insurance agent. He has always wanted a career that allows him to help people, so selling insurance made sense to him. Additionally, his new assignment provides him with a flexible schedule and financial stability. Since going full-time, Roland has helped a good number of people meet their insurance needs. Mr. Cardoza even owns an agency, Path Finder Insurance Solutions. He focuses on a variety of coverage options, including health insurance for clients under 65, Medicare, life, annuities, and final expense plans.
A friend and fellow agent, Carmen Alvaro, introduced Roland to the field marketing organization (FMO) with which she partners, Empower Brokerage. Upon discovering the organization’s comprehensive training and mentorship offerings, Roland was intrigued and also wanted to partner with Empower. The Rio Grande Valley native says the partnership has been truly beneficial for him as he has learned about helpful products for customers and exclusive tools to Empower Brokerage. He appreciates working with his regional sales director, Claudia Howard, who has presented him with many opportunities to meet new clients. Roland likewise applauds the helpful services of Empower Brokerage’s life specialists, Enrique Torres and Bertha Garcia. Roland is grateful for Enrique’s detailed assistance with illustrations and showing him what products are suitable for potential clients. Mr. Cardoza also appreciates Bertha’s advice. He explains Bertha has helped him understand how to approach customers and clarify how insurance is protection for their future. “They have been game changers,” says Roland.
Just four months into his new career, Mr. Cardoza hit the ground running. He has experienced early success and developed into a problem solver for his clients. When agents care about helping people, their jobs become easier and more fulfilling. Roland does what he can to aid inquiring customers by presenting coverage options to them. He reviews different product benefits and networks to help clients identify which one is right for their situation. “The most gratifying part is to let them know that people are out there willing to help,” says Roland. “There are options.”
Goals, Pursuits, and Recommendations
Part of Roland’s successful endeavors includes setting appropriate goals for himself. From the beginning, he sought to acquire at least one new client each day. “I am blessed to say that we have been able to do that plus a little bit better, and that is across any product,” shares the first-year agent. In the future, Roland would like to expand his business further north to San Antonio. He would like to become more involved with carriers, conduct public relations events, and, most importantly, keep helping people by protecting them with high-quality insurance products. Mr. Cardoza works hard but also enjoys traveling, exercising, and playing basketball. Yet, he says his number one pursuit is his faith. From a young age, Roland was passionate about participating in his church’s services, activities, retreats, and readings.
When asked what advice he would give fellow new agents, Roland suggests agents learn as much as they can because knowledge is power. “The more you know about a product, the greater you can assist people and, ultimately, the more successful you will be,” states Mr. Cardoza. Furthermore, he advises new agents to surround themselves with the right people, such as coworkers, employees, or the right FMO, as he has in Empower Brokerage. Roland also soundly reassures those who have unexpected life happenings in their careers. “Sometimes, life has very different plans,” says Roland. “You want to go down one route, then God would say, ‘That is not for you.’ Then, he will gently tell you why, and you go down [another path] you never saw coming, and you fall in love with it.”
